About HYNTYT

Shaped by shipping, not just advising

HYNTYT is a founder-led product advisory for Canadian SaaS teams building where privacy regulation and AI raise the stakes. It takes on a few clients at a time, and brings in associates when the work calls for it. The constant is senior product judgement, applied where sensitive data makes the calls harder.

Founder and principal

Who leads the practice

James Dreher, founder and principal of HYNTYT Technologies

HYNTYT is led by James Dreher, who has spent seventeen years building and shipping products across device security, regulated financial services, cybersecurity, and data protection. In each, handling sensitive data safely was the core of the work. He is also completing doctoral research in privacy-preserving system design.

The mix is hard to find in Canada: senior product leadership with real depth in both privacy regulation and AI governance.

Track record

Where privacy was never optional

Privacy, security, or AI was built into every one of these roles.

BlackBerry

Device and platform security, back when mobile security was the whole promise. It taught a habit that stuck: security is not a feature you add later, it is the reason customers trust the product at all.

Manulife

A cloud platform in one of the most heavily regulated data environments there is. Governance, access, and auditability mattered as much as shipping, which is the daily reality of privacy-sensitive product work.

eSentire

GenAI investigation tooling inside a managed detection and response platform, plus a developer-experience program that let more of the platform data be used safely. The same AI governance questions Canadian SaaS teams are wrestling with now.

Qohash

Current role, protecting sensitive data for regulated enterprises. It keeps the practice close to where Canadian data-protection rules meet real product decisions.

The research

Doctoral work in privacy-preserving design

James is completing a Doctor of Information Technology at Capella University, expected in 2027, on privacy-preserving system design. The research earns its keep: it shapes how HYNTYT thinks about data minimisation, consent, and the design choices that keep AI features defensible as the rules move.

Credentials and education

Security, product, and privacy research in one person

The security read, the product judgement, and the research grounding come from one chair, which is what a privacy-heavy roadmap actually needs.

  • Doctor of Information Technology (in progress), Capella University, expected 2027
  • MSc Information Systems (Information Security focus), Athabasca University
  • BSc Computer Science, Wilfrid Laurier University

Built, not just advised

The same standard in our own products

The thinking shows up in what HYNTYT builds. This website runs with no cookies, no trackers, and no third-party scripts. Pickwright, a consumer app built under the HYNTYT umbrella, is privacy by design in practice: no accounts, all data kept on the device, and diagnostics only with consent. Both hold to the same standard HYNTYT asks of its advisory clients.

The name

Say it “high and tight”

HYNTYT reads HY-N-TYT: high and tight. The name borrows from the military cut and the well-placed pitch: disciplined, precise, nothing loose. It is also how the practice runs, from scope to shipping.
